Passenger-car battery diagnostics

Verifying the weak link

Check battery capacity at every service, not just starting power.

A starter battery can crank strongly today and still lack the reserve to last until its next service. The Spectro CM-12 uses Multi-Model EIS to classify capacity against a battery matrix and assess CCA and state of charge in about 30 seconds.

Capacity at every service

Capacity reveals what a cranking test can miss.

A battery may still deliver strong cold-cranking amps while its usable energy has already faded. In a Johnson Controls analysis of 800 AGM starter batteries, 48% became unusable due to low capacity, compared with 12% due to low CCA.

Reading capacity and CCA together helps identify batteries that may fall short before the next service. For passenger cars, a typical 40% Minimum Operational Reserve Energy (MORE) threshold supports a practical pass/fail decision.

From test to decision

Find a weak battery before it strands the driver.

Multi-Model EIS compares the battery response with a matrix built from batteries at known performance levels.

01

Measure

Connect the tester and scan non-invasively in about 30 seconds.

02

Classify

Assess capacity, CCA, state of charge, resistance, and anomalies against the selected matrix.

03

Act

Use the MORE threshold to return a pass/fail service decision and retain the result.

Fleet-ready diagnostics

Test before a weak battery disrupts the drive.

For passenger-car starter batteries, a capacity threshold is commonly set near 40%. A passing result supports continued service; a failing result calls for replacement even when cranking performance still appears strong.

Connected records

Turn individual tests into fleet intelligence.

The tester connects to a host by Bluetooth and can optionally share results through CadexCloud over Wi-Fi. Local and cloud workflows can retain battery status, charge level, resistance, temperature, VIN records, and work orders.

Shared records give technicians, fleet supervisors, and owners a consistent view of battery condition across vehicles and service locations.

Battery aging trend

Cranking power is not the whole story.

In the source document's plot of 175 starter batteries, capacity falls for many batteries while CCA remains in the operating range. A CCA-only check can therefore miss a battery with too little reserve for dependable service.

The document also cites a starter-battery study in which 48% of failures were linked to capacity fade, compared with 12% linked to low CCA. Measuring both supports a more complete decision.
