Abstract
In the last decade, lithium-ion batteries have dominated the marketplace, first in portable consumer products and now in industrial and transportation applications. Every application needs to gauge how much energy the battery contains and how long it can operate before recharging. Precise monitoring and management have proven difficult, especially as a battery ages. This paper describes a patented approach developed by Cadex Electronics Inc. that assesses lithium-ion battery state of charge and state of health by directly measuring lithium-ion concentration across different states of charge. Directly assessing the electrochemical state of the battery enables precise monitoring across lithium-ion chemistries.
