    Abstract: This method assesses the state of charge and state of health of
    lithium ion batteries by directly measuring the concentration of lithium ions across different states of charge. Directly assessing the electrochemical state of the battery assures very precise monitoring -- conservatively speaking, +/- 5% accuracy, irrespective of which lithium ion chemistries are tested.

  • Diamagnetic Measurements in Lead Acid Batteries to Estimate SoC (1 MB)

    Abstract: With the development of start/stop technology to improve fuel economy and a larger prevalence of electronic loads in standard automobiles, the accurate determination of State of Charge (SoC) is highly desirable. Cadex Electronics Inc. is developing a sensor based on measuring the change in magnetic susceptibility of lead / lead sulphate as the battery changes SoC. Measurements of the diamagnetic field changes have demonstrated improved predictive capability (+/- 7%) within a challenging automotive environment.
