Cellular Phones

One of the primary applications for the C7000 Series of battery analyzers has been sorting and servicing high volumes of cell phone batteries in service centers and logistics processing facilities.

Whether operated by device manufacturers, carriers, or third party service providers (3PSPs), these facilities save significant amounts of money by salvaging and refurbishing the large volumes of batteries that have been returned by customers for exchange, either on their own or within devices perceived as faulty.

Battery Testing as a Service

  • Up to 90% of returned batteries are still serviceable
  • Service providers and their clients save money whenever a good battery is identified because they do not incur the cost of replacing it with a new one
  • Testing batteries allows repair facilities to identify if the battery or the device is faulty and save money by repairing only the faulty component
  • Refurbished batteries can be a significant source of supply for service providers that might have to purchase them elsewhere

C7000 Series Analyzers for Cellular Battery Testing

  • C7x00-C Series analyzers incorporate QuickSort™ technology to allow batteries to be sorted in 30 seconds as an initial screening process
  • C7x00-C Series contain a “Boost” function to “wake up” batteries that appear dead because their protection circuit has been triggered by an excessive discharge
  • C7x00-C Series analyzers are designed for high volume throughput with either 2 or 4 bays able to service batteries simultaneously
  • C7x00-C Series analyzers have a full range of service programs to quantify, label, and refurbish batteries for continued use
  • C7x00-C analyzers can use >1000 SnapLock™ adapters for high volume models or the RigidArm™ Universal Adapter smaller volumes of multiple battery models will be processed

QuickSort™ Technology
  • QuickSort is a rapid 30 second test that classifies the State of Health (SoH) of batteries using a patented analysis technique
  • Sorts batteries into three categories:

  • Single cell lithium-ion (3.6V/3.7V) batteries with capacities in the range of 500-1500 mAh
  • Accurate more than 90% of the time **
** A 2010 independent study of 5000 batteries determined that QuickSort correctly classified battery SoH, 96.4% of the time

Wake Up Dead Batteries Using the “Boost” Function
  • If a cell phone battery is discharged too far, its internal protection circuits will trigger and the battery will no longer accept a charge – to the user it appears to be “dead”
  • A 2-minute “Boost” will reactivate the battery
  • After charging, most reactivated batteries will continue to operate normally for the rest of their useful life
Protection triggered

The ability to process a large volume of batteries can bring tremendous value to the service organization.

Cellular Battery Testing Services: Some Quick Facts

  • A reverse logistics company in the US services 500,000 batteries per month with Cadex products in support of its wireless carrier customers
  • A reverse logistics company in the UK tests 40,000 batteries per month using Cadex analyzers
  • A Canadian carrier processes 1000 batteries per day for a single brand of phone using SnapLock adapters in Cadex analyzers
  • It has been estimated that there are millions of batteries sitting behind store counters or in back rooms that could be tested and refurbished for sale
